September in Eureka Springs

August 28th, 2010

The dog days of August are almost over (and boy, did they definitely have us “panting” from the heat!) and September is coming in just a few days. Fall is almost here and that’s one of the best times to visit Eureka Springs, AR! A lot of exciting things happen in September, so mark your calendars and give us a call here at the Bridgeford House for a room – we’d love to have you!

September 10-11:  40th Annual Eureka Springs Antique Auto Festival. There are hundreds of vintage classics in town, competing for prizes and trophies. This is our favorite car festival and there’s always a car parade on Saturday afternoon, which goes right past our front porch. Beautiful cars, Model T’s, Model A’s, classic muscle cars – and some of the best paint jobs you’ll ever see!

September 11:  The 1922 Bank Robbery Re-enactment. Right after the antique auto parade is the re-enactment of the first time in history an automobile was used as a getaway vehicle in a bank robbery – but did they get away??

September 10-11:  Wood Carvers Jamboree. Show hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Pine Mountain Village.

September 17-19: Citywide Sidewalk Sale. Bargains all over town and special prizes just for shopping! Eureka’s already a great place to shop and now this?!! Be still my beating heart!

September 24-26: 5th Annual Adventure Into Art Eureka Springs Artists Studio Tour. Artists studios open to the public. This is a free self-guided tour. For tour maps & artist info, see their website.

September 30-October 3: 20th Annual Corvette Weekend – more gorgeous cars!

And don’t forget October is not far behind, with gorgeous weather, changing fall color and more fun things to do. The fireplaces will be lit…

Warmest regards,

Cosmic Cavern – Guided Tours

August 16th, 2010

Last week we had the rare occasion to host one of our grandsons during the week, here at the Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast. We took the opportunity to take him to one of the coolest attractions (literally, since it was around 100 degrees the day we went) around Eureka Springs, Cosmic Cavern, just a 1/2 hour from here.

Average tour time is about 1 hour and 10 minutes. We had an awesome tour guide, named Angie, who knew everything about the cave and a ton about its history. The Cosmic has several known underground lakes, including one that contains Rainbow Trout, and the cave is a cool 62 degrees all year round. Definitely bring your camera because there are some spectacular photo ops.

Cosmic Caverns now offers their Wild Cave Tour! This tour is offered after hours and by reservation only. There are other special requirements and supplies needed for this tour, as you are going “off the beaten track”. Mud is involved, we hear.

So go see them and tell them the Feldmans sent you!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Crystal Bridges – Museum of American Art

August 9th, 2010

Many of you know how incredible the art is here in the Ozarks and in Eureka Springs. Many of you might not know about Crystal Bridges, an incredible art museum being built in nearby Bentonville, just a 1 hour drive. Still in the process of being built, the building itself is a work of art. The museum takes its name from a nearby natural spring and the glass-and-wood building design by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie. A series of pavilions nestled around two creek-fed ponds will house galleries, meeting and classroom spaces and a large auditorium. Sculpture and walking trails will link the museum’s 100-acre park and gardens to downtown Bentonville, Arkansas.

Crystal Bridges will house a permanent collection of masterworks of American art ranging from the colonial era to contemporary work. Visitors will be able to enjoy the collection within the state-of-the-art galleries and throughout the surrounding park. To see announced works of the permanent collection, please go to the collection page on their website.

In addition to the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions drawn from national institutions will complement the holdings of the permanent collection and exemplify the diversity of American artists.

Be sure to go see the building the next time you’re in Eureka – it’s worth the drive! And we look forward to the grand opening of this wonderful museum.

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Massage Therapy is Your Friend

July 25th, 2010

Relaxation is Eureka Springs’ middle name – if it had one. We have some of the best spas and massage therapists in the country right here in our wonderful mountain town. One of our favorites, that’s included in quite a few of our packages here at the Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast, is Gryphon’s Roost. This wonderful spa has been around for 14 years and is located at 137 Spring St, just a 5 minute walk from the inn. As stated on their website, “we are here to help YOU get above your everyday life”, Gryphon’s Roost Day Spa and Gallery is all about unwinding as you shop for jewelry, art, bath and body stuff or take advantage of one of their wonderful spa packages. Start out in their outdoor hot tub (where the view is incredible!), move on to a soothing hour-long massage with hot stones and finish up with a restorative facial and eye enhancing treatment to make you look and feel your best. These are only a few of the many options that Gryphon’s Roost provides.  One of the things we like best is their lovely couples room where you can relax with your honey or your best friend while your cares are massaged away.

What more can you ask for? Go by and see them – and tell them Bridgeford House sent you!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Incredible Food in Eureka Springs – Garden Bistro!

July 19th, 2010

When you come stay with us at the Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast, be sure to eat at the Garden Bistro, open for lunch and dinner. To quote from their arkansasgrown.org website:  “The Garden Bistro: A fresh, new dining experience in downtown Eureka! Come enjoy flavorful, farm-fresh gourmet dishes at the Garden Bistro created with ‘just- picked‘ vegetables and herbs right out of the garden!

As any gardener or lover of fresh produce knows, when dishes are created with vine-ripened, ‘just-picked’ veggies, foods take on an amazingly wonderful texture and flavor, so very different from the standard traditional foods and meals most of us are used to purchasing at local supermarkets and main-stream restaurants.

This is why at The Garden Bistro our dishes are created around seasonal, farm fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs and meats. Because we use farm-fresh, products, there is no set menu, so that we may offer our guests healthy, delicious dishes teaming with fresh flavor. Due to our mid-west growing season, this means that what a diner finds on our menu in May will be different from what they find on our August or September menu, a fact sure to create an exciting and unique dining experience every visit! This concept is a passion for Chef Lana Campbell who spent 13 years as a produce farmer on one of the largest produce farms in southwest Missouri. In 2003, she married her passion for growing produce with her passion for gourmet cooking and opened The Garden Bistro on her Missouri farm. Now she brings this `garden-fresh’ restaurant concept to Eureka Springs using produce she grows herself as well as other locally produced foods to create memorable, gourmet dishes for Eureka Springs’ newest dining sensation: The Garden Bistro. Visit us today and make a memory with someone special at the Garden Bistro, a truly fresh and unique dining experience!”

Garden Bistro is at 119 North Main and is open for lunch from 11 – 2 and dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. They are closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This will become one of your favorite restaurants in Eureka!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Gordon Lightfoot in Eureka Springs, AR!

July 10th, 2010

“If you could read my mind, love,

What a tale my thoughts could tell

Just like an old time movie

‘Bout a ghost from a wishin’ well…”

“From the 60s until today, many top artists have covered his songs, including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan (and Lightfoot has recorded his songs as well), George Hamilton IV, Olivia Newton-John, Barbra Streisand, Tony Rice, Nanci Griffith, Sarah McLachlan and other talented artists too numerous to list. His achievements have been recognized in the music industry and in his native Canada. He has five Grammy nominations and 17 Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent) and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame in 1986. In 1970, he received the prestigious Order Of Canada; in 1997 he received the Governor General’s award – the highest official Canadian honor; and in September, 2001, he was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall Of Fame.

All of this discussion is mostly about the music, always beautiful, inventive, and performed with perfection at every concert appearance – a tribute to his fine backup band as well as to Lightfoot himself. But it is perhaps his lyrics, and the combination of his words and music, that set him apart from all the others. What is unique about Lightfoot is that he appears to have heightened senses; he sees, hears and feels things that most of us don’t; and then he can create the music and lyrics to help us see, hear and feel what he does. Whether it is a love song, or a song of lost love, a historical ballad – which he writes like no other songwriter of the last half-century – or a highly personal song, what he says and how he says it leaves a lasting and often evolving impression as the listener uncovers new layers of meaning in the song.” (Valerie Magee, www.gordonlightfoot.com website).

The fabulous Gordon  Lightfoot is coming to Eureka Springs Sunday, August 22, 2010! The show starts at eight and there are still tickets available, but you better call soon! We have plenty of rooms here at Bridgeford House on that Sunday night and one night reservations are fine, plus Sunday nights are a lower weekday rate, of course. You can walk easily to the Auditorium downtown, so call today for the best room in town!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Eureka’s Fabulous Music Shows!

July 4th, 2010

If you have not been to either of our incredibly talented music shows here in town, you are in for a treat. Rivaling anything in Branson, or anywhere else for that matter, the Pine Mountain Jamboree and the Ozark Mountain Hoedown features some of the most talented musicians on either side of the Mississippi.

Mike & Dale, your hosts of the Pine Mountain Jamboree, will welcome you with open arms and serenade you with bluegrass, country, gospel and rock-n-roll. Their band is fabulous and those guys have some incredible voices! Watch out for Scott’s antics, you will laugh yourself out of your seat. And you can’t beat getting free popcorn.!

Down the road at the Ozark Mountain Hoedown, P. Nutt, Ponytail, Girl, and Granny play off the audience each night and you never know what might happen. Besides the fabulous musicians (I love a good fiddle player and theirs is world-class), their comedy will have you rolling in the aisle. They are absolutely the best at one-liners and ad-libbing with their audience, so be careful if you sit on the front row!

Don’t miss either one of these when you come visit Eureka. They are just fabulous good, clean shows. You can purchase tickets directly from their box offices or you can add them to your reservations with us online or by phone and we’ll be happy to get them all taken care of for you – either way, just go see ‘em!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) – and Sophie, too!

Murder Mystery Weekend Was a Scandal!

June 14th, 2010

Well, somebody always bites the dust in a murder mystery. And it happened once again this past weekend at our debut of “The Sure Pop Oil Well Scandal”. Our third mystery story since we began doing murder mystery weekends about 5 years ago, this one was based on a true story of an oil well scheme that took place here in Eureka Springs in the 1920’s, complete with a mysteriously burned oil well and worthless stock certificates left behind by a scoundrel.

A complete weekend event, our murder mysteries start about two weeks before arrival, with character assignments and a story synopsis. Guests arrive on the scheduled Friday night, in a costume befitting their character. Some of these costumes are gorgeous – some are just a hoot! Round 1 begins Friday night with champagne, punch and heavy appetizers – after all, we are celebrating the great oil strike in Eureka Springs which is going to make everyone RICH!!!

But…there’s always something afoot…and the evening ends tragically. Guests are commanded to return Saturday morning after breakfast to help “Willie Ketcham” (NOT Eureka Springs’ finest) solve the mystery. Slowly, information is leaked and spilled…tensions rise…tempers flare (oh, that was laughter! Sorry). But still more help is needed – the detective sends all guests into beautiful downtown Eureka Springs for a clue hunt to help figure out the killer. A scavenger clue hunt is an excellent way to wander around the shops in our historic downtown – there’s no telling what you’ll find!

Round 3 on Saturday evening involved a lot more food and some answers. At least one guest was able to tell Willie “whodunnit” but the culprit tried to escape! To our surprise, several of the guests sprang to the capture and the murderer was taken down. And you would never guess who it was…

Join us in August to find out! August 13th & 14th, 2010 – there are still wonderful rooms available!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) – and Sophie, too!

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!
