First Annual Grand Illumination Coming in May!

March 8th, 2010

We are so excited! A new Eureka Springs annual event will be making its debut this May, during the May Festival of the Arts month-long celebration. The Grand Illumination is patterned after Martha Vineyard’s Grand Illuminiation, which dates back to the 1800s.

The Eureka Springs Grand Illumination will be held from Thursday, May 13th through Sunday, May 16th when this unique Victorian town nestled high in the Ozark mountains will be aglow with thousands of Japanese and Chinese paper lanterns adorning the facades of historic downtown buildings and the porches of many of the grand Victorian homes throughout the village.

And here at the Bridgeford House B & B, we plan to be the best! Come join us the weekend of May 14th-16th, because we’re going to have a party! Saturday, May 15th, will find us and our guests in our lovely sunken garden area with all our lanterns lit; food, music and libations flowing, and Sophie trying to figure who has the best lap to sit in! Please come join us!

Eureka Springs AR Secret Underground

February 28th, 2010

Long awaited, it appears that the Eureka Springs Underground will finally be opening in March 2010. For those of you that have never visited Eureka Springs before – or maybe even for some of you that have – you may not know that we have a hidden level of tunnels, abandoned storefronts and passages under Main St. and Spring St.

The story goes that in the late 1800’s, when the town was growing by leaps and bounds and folks were cutting down the trees right and left, Main Street would flood with mud runoff every time it rained (and would eventually became known as “Mud Street”). The solution to this at the time was to build up the street one level, which created a whole level of shops underneath the current level of shops, which have been mostly abandoned all this time. One place you can see a good example of the stonework and beams that are underground is at the Mud St. Cafe, one of our favorite places in town to eat. It is located at the intersection of Main St. and Spring St. and has a plaque outside their entrance that tells of the building up of the street. It is one of very few places that is accessible. (Little known fact, there is also a very active creek that runs under Mud St. Cafe, the auditorium and the courthouse on that side – so it’s under the sub-basement, which is under the underground part, which is under the shops and restaurants…we go deep in Eureka Springs!)

On Upper Spring St., where Bridgeford House is located, you can see all along our side of the street the wall that currently holds up Spring St. We believe the street was built up even this far up on Spring St., which makes the layout of the Bridgeford House make more sense. Our garden is a full level below the street and the door that now opens into our dining room from that garden level we believe must have been the original front door to the original parlor (that dining room has one of only two original fireplaces and the other one is covered up). Our current front door is just a few steps up from the modern level of the street and opens up to our current parlor. Two of the five B&B guest rooms, which were the original bedrooms in the house, open up right off that parlor. We don’t believe the original front door would have been right near the bedrooms! Victorians were way too uptight for that!

Come to Eureka this season and take a tour of this brand-new Eureka-scape! We’ll make sure you get tickets!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) – and Sophie, too!

Beaver Bridge on the White River

For those of you who have visited with us, hopefully we sent you on a driving tour. Eureka Springs in Northwest Arkansas has some of the most beautiful countryside in the continental United States. Green, glorious mountains, two sparkling and very active rivers, the White River and the Kings River (canoeing and floating are available during season), and two exceptional lakes for boating and fishing, Beaver Lake and Tablerock Lake. Everywhere are incredible, breath-taking views of the Ozark mountains.

One of our favorite side trips that we like to send people on is over to Beaver Bridge on the White River, about a 5 minute drive from the Bridgeford House B&B. This is a rare example of a one-lane suspension bridge in Arkansas, built in 1943. Called the “Golden Gate of the Ozarks,” this historic swinging bridge is the last one in Arkansas open to vehicular traffic and is referred to as “the bridge to nostalgia.” The structure was featured in the 2005 movie, “Elizabethtown.” As you can see from this photo, the beauty of the surrounding area cannot be matched.

Come see us and we’ll make sure you know how to get there!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Beautiful Thorncrown Chapel

February 18th, 2010

We absolutely love to do weddings here at the Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast, but have a limited capacity. For those of you looking to do a large, fairytale wedding, look no further than the Thorncrown Chapel, just outside of Eureka Springs about a mile. “The Glass Chapel in the Woods” is made entirely of wood and glass by Frank Lloyd Wright’s only apprentice, E. Fay Jones. This is as spiritual a place as we have ever been in. The weddings here are magical.

When you are ready, come honeymoon with us at the inn. We are in the historic district of Eureka Springs and after you park, you don’t even have to get in your car again until you have to leave.

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Chocolate Lovers Festival on Valentine’s Weekend!

February 6th, 2010

Come to Eureka Springs for Valentine’s weekend – it’s the only place around where you can gorge yourself totally on chocolate and still take some home with you! The 6th annual Chocolate Lovers Festival is Saturday, February 13th, 2010, at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center, from 9:00 to 3:30. That’s a lot of sinful decadence.

Festival highlights include:  chocolate tasting, dipping fountains, wine, gifts for lovers, souvenir photos & t-shirts, “Best of” chocolate contests, and silent auction of winning entries.

This is what it’s like:  Pay your $10 for your ticket and receive your carrying box, and get in line. You will pass by some of the most delectable, sinful, fattening, luscious, lip smacking chocolate you have ever seen – and you get to just pick it up, stuff it in your box – and stuff it in your mouth! And then you get to go on to the next one! Nobody tells you  that’s enough! It’s only later when you’re reaching for the Tums that you’ll regret it, but at the time – it’s heaven!

See you there!

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

February 1st, 2010

The king and queen have been crowned and the festivities begin! Yes, Eureka Springs does do Mardi Gras in style and if you love that kind of party but can’t travel as far south as New Orleans, be sure to come to Eureka this week! The party begins this Thursday, February 4th, with the Coronation Royalty Ball! By reservation only, this high-class event takes place at the Crescent Hotel and includes a champagne buffet supper!

On Friday, February 5th, don’t miss the Hookers and Jokers Ball at the Inn of the Ozarks Convention Center. There will be costumes galore and all visitors are invited to join in the fun! “Gay 90’s”, “Guys and Dolls” or “Freakin’ Eurekan” are all acceptable themes – and all open to interpretation! If you are familiar with Eureka Springs at all – you know we’re not kidding!

And if you can’t make it before than, be sure to watch the parade on Saturday, February 6th, at 2 p.m. Queuing up right on Spring St., just a block from the Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast, everyone is invited to join in! Even your dog is invited to join the “Krewe of Barkus” participating in the parade! Come see Sophie as “Miss Joker”!

And on Sunday, February 7th, back at the Crescent Hotel, join us for the Jazz Brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

And if you still haven’t managed to leave town before Tuesday, February 16th, you have to join the Fat Tuesday Pub Krawl – easy to do in downtown Eureka! Doesn’t matter how far you make it – somebody’ll pick you up!

For full details, schedule and lots of photos, visit the Krewe of Krazo’s site (that’s “Ozark” spelled backwards).

Shakespeare in the Ozarks

January 7th, 2010

It is said that over 90 Shakespeare in the Park venues exist in the US but there has never been one in Arkansas until now. And what better place to do it than the European ambiance of Eureka Springs!

Its inaugural performance was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the Basin park in downtown Eureka in July of 2009. Since then it has been realized that a more permanent spot was needed and the dream was on.

On November 30, 2009, the Shakespeare in the Ozarks stage located in Harmon Park (just a short walk from the Bridgeford House) was officially dedicated. Located in the amphitheater where the old Summer Auditorium stood before it was demolished sometime around the time of the Great Depression, the new stage returns Harmon Park to its roots as an outdoor community gathering place for the performing arts.

The plan is to open Shakespeare in the Ozarks May, 2010, to coincide with Eureka’s May Festival of the Arts, with a production of Shakespeare’s first play, The Comedy of Errors. The production will celebrate Eureka Springs by transposing the action (keeping the story and language intact) to this city in its hey day, say about 1900. The play is expected to be performed three times a week, late afternoons Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In time a permanent stage house will be built with seating and lighting for night time performances. The intention is to do one play the first year, (Comedy of Errors) and two the next year, Comedy of Errors and perhaps Taming of the Shrew, played on the same set. By the third year it is expected the plays will be performed at night, and hope to add one of the romances (maybe Tempest, Cymbeline, Winter’s Tale or Pericles) in addition to the comedies.

The scope of the project is limited only by the funding that can be raised but there is nothing like this anywhere else in the region and the hope is to draw Shakespeare lovers from surrounding states, for these highly professional and enjoyable performances.

And so:

“All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.”

Shakespeare, As You Like It

We hope to see you here.

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) – and Sophie, too!

Winter in Eureka Springs

December 30th, 2009

It’s snowed twice in the past week! Not necessarily the norm for Eureka Springs, but always a storybook picture! Eureka Springs looks like a fantasy land in the winter time, with the dark forest of trees stark against the winter sky and all the dollhouses that are revealed by the bare trees! The first time Jeff and I walked downtown after all the leaves fell in the fall, we were stunned by the number of houses up on the hills! It took us some time to figure out how to get up there but eventually we did. That was half the fun, following little paths and trails through the woods and then coming across one of the stunning Victorian houses that we had seen from down below. Those jewels are often hidden when the trees are in full leaf.

Cozy Winter

Is this beautiful or what?

There are shops and galleries open, restaurants operating and lots of cozy B&B’ing to be had here in the wintertime. Remember, three of our rooms have fireplaces and three have whirlpools, some perfect ways to spend your winter vacation. Here at Bridgeford House we have lots of games, puzzles and books and movies on site. Cocoa, popcorn, and a different home-baked treat each afternoon gives you lots to munch on and you can always get Chelsea’s to deliver pizza! And, don’t forget – we have great winter rates!

And of course, there is always Sophie to cuddle up with…
