DeVito’s of Eureka Springs – You Can’t Beat Great Italian Food!

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

Right off the bat I can tell you my favorite item at DeVito’s Restaurant in downtown Eureka Springs and you’re going to laugh, but I’m not kidding…trout fingers! Bet you didn’t even know trout had fingers! Honestly, they are a wonderful appetizer of crispy, boneless strips of trout with a seasoned cornmeal coating and served with a smoky dill sauce – they are just awesome! Check their menu out for main dishes and you will find a huge variety of homemade Italian splendor, not the least of which is their trout dishes that they are famous for. Owner James DeVito continues a tradition begun by his family back in 1956 and the trout are served fresh from his family’s trout farm. Try this on for size: Pesto Trout Parmesan…or Lemon Trout…or Chargrilled Trout – okay, they’re all good. You get the point.

However, let’s not forget we are here for classic Italian – how about Spaghetti, Ravioli or Fettuccine? Start with that base and pick a sauce or meat to go on top:  Pesto, meatballs, Italian sausage – how about fresh cream, butter and Parmesan cheese over your fettuccine? I think ’nuff said.

DeVito’s has a full bar, of course – and a huge selection of wines! This is a perfect place to bring someone special, order a lovely bottle of wine and propose to her right there. James and his lovely wife, Teresa, will take very good care of you. Then go put your new fiance on a carriage ride right through downtown Eureka Springs… well, you get the idea. DeVitos’ has a lovely intimate atmosphere for that kind of thing, plus, coming in 2012, they will add 4-story high rooftop dining overlooking East Mountain for some incredible views! So add that to your to-do list the next time you come to Eureka – hopefully visiting our Arkansas bed and breakfast here at the Bridgeford House. (You know how lonely our Mini Schnauzer, Sophie, gets for company.) And yes, of course you can walk to DeVito’s from here!

Warmest regards,

Sophie looking for guests to arrive

Gaskins Cabin Steak House – Log Cabin Style!

Monday, September 12th, 2011

One of the best restaurants in Eureka Springs is the Gaskins Cabin Steak House – about 3 miles north of Eureka on Hwy 23. This authentic log cabin was built in 1864 by a well-known bear hunter and one of the area’s earliest settlers, John Gaskins. He lived there with his wife and 11 children! (We can imagine “time out” for those kids – threaten ‘em with a bear!)

Gaskins Cabin was a gathering place. The Gaskins family always welcomed train-travelers. After they unloaded from the Gaskins Switch train depot, visitors would relax in the Gaskins’ home while waiting for family and friends to pick them up and take them to their final destinations. Here, the guest would eat, drink, and share stories of their lives, becoming extended family to the Gaskins. We love this philosophy – just like ours!

Now, 140 years later, Gaskins Cabin is the oldest standing property in Carroll County, and it is still a gathering place.

Examples of some of their menu items are Classic Escargot, Atlantic Salmon, Shrimp Scampi and Deep Fried Shrimp. Their steak choices include Filet Mignon, Prime Rib, and Boneless Rib Eye. You will be asked what color you want the center to be and it will be exactly that when you receive it! They also have a great wine list and phenomenal desserts – we bet you can bring dessert back to your room if you’re too full of steak; we have utensils for you in your room for just such an occasion.

Okay, we admit that this is one of the very few places you really can’t walk to from Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast, but it’s well worth the short drive. And no charge for parking there, either!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Casa Colina Grill & Cantina

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

The entrance to the Historic District in downtown Eureka Springs is marked by a wonderful garden in its median, and then you plunge down a long, curvy hill (known as Planer hill) before the downtown opens up before you (the first of many hills). About halfway down that hill, on the left, is the only house ever built on Planer Hill. And it is now the home of Casa Colina Grill & Cantina. Winner of Best New Restaurant in the Arkansas People’s Choice Award for 2009, Casa Colina serves an awesome blend of Texas and Mexican flavors together to arrive at their unique style of Mexican food (it’s not Tex-Mex). To start out, check out the Flamada – a blend of three Mexican cheeses and chorizo, flambeed at your table:

Their enchiladas are wonderful and you get a full plate. Pick from smoked shredded beef, smoked pork, chicken, shrimp and cheese, or avocado – all with different sauces. And the beauty of the presentation of their food is pure artistry!

They have the best outdoor deck area in town, a full bar and all of the items on their menu are to die for. Stop by Casa Colina the next time you visit Eureka and let them know we sent you (they’re our next door neighbors!)

Local Flavor Cafe-Historic Downtown Eureka Springs

Monday, April 4th, 2011

From time to time we like to write about some of our favorite restaurants. Located in the heart of Historic Eureka Springs, Local Flavor Café has been a tradition for locals and tourists alike since 1991. Chef owned and operated, sixth generation native Britt Evans brings his extensive experience to the table serving fresh and creative dishes aimed to please every pallette. Britt offers breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch with the menu consisting of many influences, such as Southwest, Italian, French and American, with the focus always on freshness.

One of Sam’s all-time favorites is their Santa Fe Pita stuffed with pepper jack cheese, avocado and choice of chicken, beef or black beans topped with sour cream, tomato and sides of red and mango salsas, which is on their lunch menu (she always gets chicken). They also have incredible cheeseburgers and wonderful vegetarian choices, if that is your preference.

They have an extensive wine collection and a full bar for spirits and a wide variety of beer. One of the best things about Local Flavor (besides their awesome food!) is their outdoor balcony, which hangs over Main St. and allows for wonderful people-watching opportunities and a great view of the historic downtown and mountain to the east.

As is the case with many of the fabulous restaurants in Eureka Springs, Local Flavor is within a pleasant walk from the Bridgeford House Bed and Breakfast and passes a lot of great shopping!

Fantastic Italian – Ermilio’s Italian Home cooking

Monday, February 7th, 2011

If you have ever been to Eureka Springs – and even if you haven’t yet – everybody has heard about Ermilio’s Italian Home Cooking.

Winner of Best Italian Restaurant – All Around Arkansas and Best Restaurant – In Eureka Springs, Arkansas Times 2010 Readers Choice Awards, Ermilio’s serves fine Italian food in a comfortable homey (yet very romantic!) atmosphere. We love the Pesto Bread Rounds as an appetizer (Whole-grain bread slices spread with fresh pesto, covered with mozzarella cheese, broiled, then topped with fresh tomato slices. Served hot!) and the fact that you get to pick your sauce first, then the pasta that you want it to go on. Sam loves Mom’s Homemade Meatballs and usually has it put on Mostaccioli. Saturday is Meat Lasagna night and is to die for! And there is always hot bread on the table, along with a huge bowl of roasted garlic that you can smash and spread on your bread – but be careful, we always know at breakfast how much garlic you’ve had! But it’s worth it.

During the season, especially on weekends, Ermilio’s is very crowded and we usually advise guests to go very early, at 5:00. If you do get there later and there is a wait, they open up the neatest little bar in the attic at the top of their historic little Victorian house. There are all kinds of cute, quaint seating and lots of games that you can play while you wait and sip your cocktail.

Ermilio’s takes no reservations, so don’t even ask. But it’s worth the wait for a unique restaurant that is starting out in their 21st year when they re-open this week, just in time for Valentine’s romance, Friday, February 11th.

During the season with beautiful weather, Ermilio’s is walkable from Bridgeford House B&B, especially afterwards when you want to walk off all those calories!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Incredible Food in Eureka Springs – Garden Bistro!

Monday, July 19th, 2010

When you come stay with us at the Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast, be sure to eat at the Garden Bistro, open for lunch and dinner. To quote from their arkansasgrown.org website:  “The Garden Bistro: A fresh, new dining experience in downtown Eureka! Come enjoy flavorful, farm-fresh gourmet dishes at the Garden Bistro created with ‘just- picked‘ vegetables and herbs right out of the garden!

As any gardener or lover of fresh produce knows, when dishes are created with vine-ripened, ‘just-picked’ veggies, foods take on an amazingly wonderful texture and flavor, so very different from the standard traditional foods and meals most of us are used to purchasing at local supermarkets and main-stream restaurants.

This is why at The Garden Bistro our dishes are created around seasonal, farm fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs and meats. Because we use farm-fresh, products, there is no set menu, so that we may offer our guests healthy, delicious dishes teaming with fresh flavor. Due to our mid-west growing season, this means that what a diner finds on our menu in May will be different from what they find on our August or September menu, a fact sure to create an exciting and unique dining experience every visit! This concept is a passion for Chef Lana Campbell who spent 13 years as a produce farmer on one of the largest produce farms in southwest Missouri. In 2003, she married her passion for growing produce with her passion for gourmet cooking and opened The Garden Bistro on her Missouri farm. Now she brings this `garden-fresh’ restaurant concept to Eureka Springs using produce she grows herself as well as other locally produced foods to create memorable, gourmet dishes for Eureka Springs’ newest dining sensation: The Garden Bistro. Visit us today and make a memory with someone special at the Garden Bistro, a truly fresh and unique dining experience!”

Garden Bistro is at 119 North Main and is open for lunch from 11 – 2 and dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. They are closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This will become one of your favorite restaurants in Eureka!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Unique Eating: Mud St. Cafe

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

Ask anybody, they’ll tell you – Jeff and I love to eat! One of our favorite places to eat is Mud St. Cafe. Nestled right downtown at Main and Spring, we can walk there from Bridgeford House in about ten minutes – assuming we don’t end up stopping and talking to half a dozen people along the way – that happens here in Eureka…a lot.

Anyway, besides just fantastic food, Mud St. provides an atmosphere found nowhere else in Eureka – that of the underground. One of the very few places where you can see the underground (and actually DO something besides tour it), Mud St. Cafe provides an eclectic coffee house-type atmosphere that allows for complete relaxation and fun.

They have a gorgeous turn of the century oak bar with beveled mirrors and lots of local art on the walls. Throw in some oak tables and chairs, Victorian carpet and a cozy sitting area with magazines and newspapers and you’ve got a place where a lot of the locals plant their feet. There are two things I just love about Mud St.:  their cheeseburgers and the Trivial Pursuit cards on each of the tables!

Mud St. Cafe Dining Rooms

Mud St. Cafe does have a full bar and a wide selection of fresh, ground roast coffees. While I cannot speak for the taste of the coffee (I am NOT a coffee person), I have seen lots of happy sippers sitting among the tables.  I can speak of their lovely loose teas, served in nice hot tea pots with strainers – no teas bags here!

They are also very famous for their huge muffins and delectable desserts. So, since we know everyone that comes to Eureka Springs is planning on eating as many calories as possible because of our many fabulous restaurants (remember, you can walk it all off just by going up Mountain St. or Howell St. one time!), you might as well indulge in dessert at Mud St. after their wonderful lunch.

If you book a package with us that includes lunch in the historic downtown, it will be at Mud St. Cafe. Ask any local or any frequent visitor, and they’ll tell you how to find it. We’ll see you there…

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too! (except in the restaurant – haven’t been able to sneak her in…)
