Classes for Budding Artists

Friday, January 20th, 2012

We have a wonderful treasure right here in Eureka Springs. It’s call ESSA, The Eureka Springs School of the Arts. This venue offers  workshops in arts and crafts throughout the year for interested, emerging and professional artists. Award-winning and noted artists and crafts persons guide students to learn new art forms and expand their current skill levels. Their mission statement says it all: In the belief that art is vital to the human spirit, the Eureka Springs School of the Arts is committed to cultivating, promoting, and encouraging artistic expression by providing art education opportunities in a unique environment of beauty and creativity.

Examples of some classes include “Intro to Wheel Throwing in Clay” for beginning students, taught in a real artist’s studio by Terry L. Russell, who has been a clay artist for 40 years. Students will learn the basic skills for making vessels on the potters wheel.

Or you could try “Introduction to Jewelry Making”, “Metalsmithing: Wrap, Stitch, Fold & Rivet”, “Basic Acrylic Painting” and even “Marketing for the Professional Artist Series”. There is “Digital Photography”, “Introduction to Botanical Painting”, or “Bookmaking”. A wide variety of classes are offered and you can see their 2012 calendar on their website.

There are even limited scholarships that are available, awarded on the basis of merit and need and are granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Come stay with us while you study – we’ll make sure you’re well-fed and get to where you need to go. And we would love to see your work when you finish!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Home is Where the Heart Is

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

Winter is here and I’ve always loved this time of the year because it’s quiet. Our regular home back in Richardson, TX, was like that, too. It’s as if the world was suddenly at peace after the intense hustle and bustle of summer – the constant going, going, going. You could curl up with a good book in front of a roaring fireplace, often times with a blanket of snow outside to really deaden all the outside noise, and the world would leave you alone. There was no more secure place in the world.

Winter in Eureka Springs, AR, is like that. And life is like that at the Bridgeford House. We have had guests that have gotten snowed in that have told us that it was one of the best vacations of their lives. (Of course, we can’t guarantee it will snow while you’re here, but the cold winter chill outside still keeps us cozy as kittens inside). A good bed and breakfast can provide you that home away from home – without the hard work and clean up! A good pampering can set anybody right and allow them the the rest and peace to go back and face the world.

We love doing that for you here. Several of our rooms have fireplaces and whirlpool tubs. All of them have a coffee pot and microwave right in your room, for hot tea, cocoa or popcorn – all provided for you at your complementary (yes, that means “free of charge”!) refreshment station (including a refrigerator) – right in your room! Home-baked sweets are provided for you each afternoon, so all you have to do is wait for it to be delivered! A hot, 4-course breakfast each morning will pretty much fill you up so that you don’t even need to go out for lunch if you don’t want to. Our parlor is full of games, puzzles and movies to play on your personal TVs in your room.

And don’t let anyone tell you Eureka closes up for the winter – there is always stuff open! Most of the shops stay open all winter long (with shorter hours), there are always restaurants and local pubs that are open, as well – what do you think we locals do in the wintertime? We still have to eat and we still like to get out and have a good time. Trust me, there are still lots of spas that will provide relaxing massages. If the trolleys aren’t running that particular day, you know we’re just a few minutes walk to downtown. And when the leaves are gone from our forest of trees – a whole new world opens up! Get out there and hike through our little mountains and neighborhoods that are right here in the historic district. You’ll see stuff you never see in the summertime.

And…Sophie is always here to cuddle.

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Charity Begins in Eureka Springs!

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

We belong to a wonderful group of local B&Bs, called Bed and Breakfast Inns of Eureka Springs, and we are all featuring an awesome opportunity this summer to give back to the community. Starting July 18th and ending August 31st, come stay at our Arkansas bed and breakfast for a two-night Sunday-Thursday stay and you can purchase the 1st night at regular rate and get the second night free – by writing a $35 check (or more, if you like!) to ECHO (Eureka Christian Health Outreach). ECHO is Eureka’s free health care clinic for uninsured, low-income individuals and provides incredible care to these folks in need. The ECHO Clinic has been featured on Oprah, in People magazine, and on ABC News’ “Spirit of America” series.

Another opportunity to give to ECHO is our annual Sweet Treats Cookie Tour (this year on Saturday, December 10th, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.) where a percentage of the proceeds also go to ECHO.

We know that not everyone takes the time to give as they’d like, so here’s an easy way to do just that while enjoying some downtime in Eureka Springs. Come enjoy the beauty and selflessness that is Eureka Springs.

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Eat Your Way Through Eureka Springs

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

It’s almost time for our annual Sweet Treats Cookie and Candy Tour! Come join us here at the Bridgeford House Bed and Breakfast for the weekend of December 10th & 11th, 2010, and participate in an exciting tour of eight historic bed and breakfasts here in Eureka Springs. All will be dressed to the nines in Christmas holiday splendor – great for taking decorating ideas home! At each inn you will be greeted with smiling innkeepers handing you a sample of each of their two sweet treats – candy or cookies or some other sugar-laced concoction – and their recipes to take home! Guaranteed to gain several pounds – unless you skip the trolley and walk to all the inns, which is definitely possible.

Here at the Bridgeford House, we again offer our weekend package so that not only can you enjoy the sweet treats, you can enjoy some holiday shopping and some holiday relaxing, too! For just an add-on cost of $55 to the cost of your two-night stay in the room of your choice (depending on availability), we’ll provide two tickets to the tour, two trolley tickets (for the lazy folks), and two elegant Christmas ornaments for a keepsake. Of course you will also receive our full-size, four-course breakfast each morning, our Sweet Treats samples and recipes, hot chocolate, plus all the usual treats you’ll find on your bed each afternoon! (No, we’re not talking about Sophie, we’re talking about more food!)

And each ticket holder will have a chance to win one of three $100 gift certificates to be used at the tour inn of your choice for lodging (to be used by June 30, 2011).

The tour is from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 11th, and tickets are $20 each. It is not necessary to book a stay to do the tour – just call us for tour tickets!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Bed & Breakfasts Vs. Hotels

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

Most people have stayed at a hotel (or motel) at some time in their life. Surprisingly, not everyone has stayed at a bed and breakfast (B&B) because they just don’t know how very different the experience can be. While hotels are usually a cookie-cutter, sterile environment with an impersonal staff, B&Bs are all unique. They may be Victorian, which is prevalent in Eureka Springs and is the style of the Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast, or they might be a log home, modern style, Craftsman or even a castle! The environment will feel more like home, with a home-cooked meal and your own personal maid that leaves cookies on your bed. And, yes, you will have your own private bath, certainly at our inn. It is rare nowadays to have to share a bath in a US inn (still common over in Europe, though).

Of course, one of the key points of a bed and breakfast is the breakfast – included with the room rate. (If it’s not, you need to find a different place to stay – that’s not a bed and breakfast!) Usually cooked by the owner of the B&B with a trend towards the gourmet, quite a few B&Bs provide a full, hot 3- or 4-course breakfast. What we served here at the Bridgeford House this morning was Mixed Fruit with a homemade Devonshire cream, Edwardian Egg Casserole (maple sausage, egg and cheese casserole), Apple Crunch Bake (biscuits, apples, nuts, cinnamon and brown sugar baked together) and bacon. Of course we always have a juice (sometimes fruit smoothies) and coffee, tea and a cold glass of milk, if desired. Some B&Bs only provide a Continental breakfast, which is usually a lot of carbs (primarily pastries) but some do provide a pretty extensive Continental breakfast that is very filling.

B&Bs can be quite different in the way they serve their breakfast. We all sit down at one sitting (9:00 a.m. – we are a vacation destination after all!) and eat together, on fine china and gold flatware, with candles lit, and we serve our guests like royalty. (We also have very fun and lively conversations, which is what we prefer).  Some B&Bs have separate tables that seat 2-4 people at a table and have staggered eating times, or a time range, say, 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Some B&Bs we’ve been to have baskets delivered to your room at a pre-arranged time.

But one of the most important advantages and perks of a B&B is the lack of added fees – so prevalent in hotels nowadays. Parking, maid service, credit card fees, wi-fi or high-speed Internet access, coffee and other beverages, and now charitable donations may appear on your hotel bill! At B&Bs, besides a wonderful breakfast being included, very often soft drinks, waters, coffee, tea and homemade treats are as well. Here at our inn, we have refrigerators in every room (so you don’t even have to leave your room to go down to the common pantry to get what you want) and we keep those stocked with cold soft drinks and waters (as well as chilled drinking glasses and champagne glasses). We also have a microwave in each room and provide popcorn and cocoa, and of course we have a coffee pot for those early risers that can’t wait for our fresh ground roast coffee at breakfast. We have a huge tea collection to provide you with that hot cup of tea and every afternoon you will find a plate of goodies on your bed (gooey lemon bars, butterscotch or cinnamon chip scones, fudge marble pound cake – just to name a few of the possibilities!). There are candies and chocolates in your room, as well as in the parlor (okay, so we have a sweet tooth…). We also provide soaps and shampoos and bath salts for the whirlpool rooms. You will never be charged a cent for any of those extras – because we are a bed and breakfast.

And you get to snuggle up with Sophie for free!

Sophie in a guest's bed, taking full advantage!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Murder Mystery Weekend Was a Scandal!

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Well, somebody always bites the dust in a murder mystery. And it happened once again this past weekend at our debut of “The Sure Pop Oil Well Scandal”. Our third mystery story since we began doing murder mystery weekends about 5 years ago, this one was based on a true story of an oil well scheme that took place here in Eureka Springs in the 1920′s, complete with a mysteriously burned oil well and worthless stock certificates left behind by a scoundrel.

A complete weekend event, our murder mysteries start about two weeks before arrival, with character assignments and a story synopsis. Guests arrive on the scheduled Friday night, in a costume befitting their character. Some of these costumes are gorgeous – some are just a hoot! Round 1 begins Friday night with champagne, punch and heavy appetizers – after all, we are celebrating the great oil strike in Eureka Springs which is going to make everyone RICH!!!

But…there’s always something afoot…and the evening ends tragically. Guests are commanded to return Saturday morning after breakfast to help “Willie Ketcham” (NOT Eureka Springs’ finest) solve the mystery. Slowly, information is leaked and spilled…tensions rise…tempers flare (oh, that was laughter! Sorry). But still more help is needed – the detective sends all guests into beautiful downtown Eureka Springs for a clue hunt to help figure out the killer. A scavenger clue hunt is an excellent way to wander around the shops in our historic downtown – there’s no telling what you’ll find!

Round 3 on Saturday evening involved a lot more food and some answers. At least one guest was able to tell Willie “whodunnit” but the culprit tried to escape! To our surprise, several of the guests sprang to the capture and the murderer was taken down. And you would never guess who it was…

Join us in August to find out! August 13th & 14th, 2010 – there are still wonderful rooms available!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) – and Sophie, too!

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

First Annual Grand Illumination Coming in May!

Monday, March 8th, 2010

We are so excited! A new Eureka Springs annual event will be making its debut this May, during the May Festival of the Arts month-long celebration. The Grand Illumination is patterned after Martha Vineyard’s Grand Illuminiation, which dates back to the 1800s.

The Eureka Springs Grand Illumination will be held from Thursday, May 13th through Sunday, May 16th when this unique Victorian town nestled high in the Ozark mountains will be aglow with thousands of Japanese and Chinese paper lanterns adorning the facades of historic downtown buildings and the porches of many of the grand Victorian homes throughout the village.

Victorian House in Martha's Vineyard During Their Grand Illumination

And here at the Bridgeford House B & B, we plan to be the best! Come join us the weekend of May 14th-16th, because we’re going to have a party! Saturday, May 15th, will find us and our guests in our lovely sunken garden area with all our lanterns lit; food, music and libations flowing, and Sophie trying to figure who has the best lap to sit in! Please come join us!

Winter in Eureka Springs

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

It’s snowed twice in the past week! Not necessarily the norm for Eureka Springs, but always a storybook picture! Eureka Springs looks like a fantasy land in the winter time, with the dark forest of trees stark against the winter sky and all the dollhouses that are revealed by the bare trees! The first time Jeff and I walked downtown after all the leaves fell in the fall, we were stunned by the number of houses up on the hills! It took us some time to figure out how to get up there but eventually we did. That was half the fun, following little paths and trails through the woods and then coming across one of the stunning Victorian houses that we had seen from down below. Those jewels are often hidden when the trees are in full leaf.

Cozy Winter

Is this beautiful or what?

There are shops and galleries open, restaurants operating and lots of cozy B&B’ing to be had here in the wintertime. Remember, three of our rooms have fireplaces and three have whirlpools, some perfect ways to spend your winter vacation. Here at Bridgeford House we have lots of games, puzzles and books and movies on site. Cocoa, popcorn, and a different home-baked treat each afternoon gives you lots to munch on and you can always get Chelsea’s to deliver pizza! And, don’t forget – we have great winter rates!

And of course, there is always Sophie to cuddle up with…

Recession Vacations

Monday, July 27th, 2009

With the economy having the characteristics of a perpetual roller coaster, a four-day vacation to our neck of the woods (and, boy, do we have woods!) is just the ticket! Inexpensive, relaxing, fun-filled and just plain gorgeous doesn’t even begin to describe what a vacation in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, can be like.

We have found that quite a few reservations here lately have been four-day jaunts for folks that are within a day’s drive. To make the budget even happier, we here at the 1884 Bridgeford House Bed and Breakfast Inn offer that fourth night 1/2 off! You don’t even have to ask for it, we’ll just automatically give it to you. And remember what else you get that is included in your inn stay, no extra charge: A full-size, 4-course breakfast each morning (which most guests say fill them up so much they never eat any lunch – see, we save you money right there!), home-baked treats placed on your bed each afternoon (helps hold you over from the skipped lunch until dinner out at one of our many fabulous unique restaurants in town), cold soft drinks and cold bottled water in your room’s refrigerator which we replenish each and every day, and popcorn in your room for a late-night snack.

And the amount of things to do in Eureka Springs and the surrounding area are phenomenal. Just to name the top few: Shopping in our beautiful downtown historic district at truly unique boutique shops and wonderful art galleries, visiting one of our many fabulous day spas, eating at one of over 75 restaurants, attending ghost tours, canoeing or rafting on not one, but two different rivers, renting a boat on beautiful Beaver Lake or taking the lake sightseeing tour cruise on the Belle of the Ozarks, climbing through one the many caves in the area (there are five or six just within an hour’s drive and one right here in town!). Should I go on? Okay – there is incredible outdoor and free music every day in our beautiful Basin Spring Park right downtown, there is world-class fishing on Beaver Lake, complete with guide if you desire, there is historic architecture to view on unbelievably beautiful walking paths throughout downtown, incredible art to view and buy from our large and talented artistic community, there’s horseback riding, there’s a railroad with dinner and lunch rides, there’s our wonderful large cat refuge right outside of town, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, there’s…there’s too much to even do in four days! But at least come get started!

Warmest regards,

Sam and Jeff (and Sophie, of course!)
